On June 11-12, the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2024 was held in Berlin. This annual event, themed “United in defense. United in recovery. Stronger Together,” brought together over 3,400 participants from government, civil society, international organizations, and businesses. The conference focused on Ukraine’s recovery, emphasizing necessary reforms and modernization to meet EU standards. The main topics discussed at the event included
- social recovery and human capital,
- business and economic growth,
- the recovery of municipalities and regions,
- and EU accession.
Our mission at the conference was to represent Ukrainian LGBTQI+ community and to expand and strengthen national and international advocacy for LGBTQI+ rights. We are an integral part of Ukrainian society, and protecting our rights and eliminating discrimination will lead to greater involvement in the country’s recovery. Every individual is unique and important, deserving the opportunity to realize their potential without prejudice or stereotypes. A diverse and professional populace is beneficial for the country’s development. Effective protection of vulnerable groups is a commitment Ukraine has made on its path towards European integration and democratization.
As Kateryna Levchenko, Commissioner for Gender Policy, rightly noted, one of the overarching themes of the conference was the involvement of women and their leadership. She highlighted Ukraine’s journey from recognizing the need for gender inclusion to ensuring its implementation at the national level. Currently, this effort extends to uniting governments, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations in the International Alliance for the Support of Gender-Responsible Reconstruction of Ukraine.
The conference panelists consistently emphasized the necessity of including all population groups, including women and LGBTQI+ individuals, in Ukraine’s restoration efforts. We appreciate their recognition and support.
The rule of law is essential for the functioning of democracy. Independent and professional courts and prosecutors are crucial for creating a favorable business environment and ensuring accountability for war crimes.
During the discussions, Ukraine’s progress in ensuring the rule of law and the independence of the judicial system was repeatedly acknowledged. The completion of judicial reforms, including those of the prosecutor’s office, is a prerequisite for the consistent and constitutional investigation of Russian war crimes and the foundation for restoring justice.
We are incredibly grateful to the organizers and colleagues who made this important event possible.
The democratic future of Ukraine is important for all of Europe, and we can achieve it by joining forces!
